January 11, 2021- Elizabethtown Area High School seniors Megan Handshew and Ben Azzalina were named the Elizabethtown Rotary Club's students of the month for January. Handshew and Azzalina were honored for their high academic achievement, extensive school involvement, and community service activities.

Handshew is the daughter of Mike and Deb Handshew of Elizabethtown. She is a member of the prestigious National Honor Society. Handshew holds numerous leadership positions at the high school, including secretary for the Class of 2021, webmaster for the Key Club, and captain of the girls' swimming and diving team. She is a member of the high school band, concert choir, and show choir. Handshew is also active with the theater arts program, where she has performed in both the fall play and spring musical.

Handshew has earned numerous awards during her high school years. She received the Academic Excellence Award in Mind & Body Wellness as part of the high school's underclass awards program. She has also earned varsity letters in swimming and track and field.

Handshew is active in the community, where she is both a dancer and teacher assistant with the E-Dance Center. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she supported the Elizabethtown Ministerium with serving lunches to families in need. Handshew has also volunteered at the Water Street Rescue Mission, the Wittel Farm, Lantern Hill, the Ronald McDonald House, and the Elizabethtown Cupboard. She is an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown.

Handshew plans to attend college and major in special education.

Azzalina is the son of Scott and Georgann Azzalina of Elizabethtown. He is a member of the prestigious National Honor Society. Azzalina holds numerous leadership positions at the high school, including student council treasurer and swim team captain. An accomplished swimmer, he holds two school records and is a three-time, first-team all-conference swimmer. He is active with the stock market club, Mini-THON, the gifted education program, and the student ambassador program.

Azzalina has earned EAHS's Outstanding Underclassman Award. He also was a Latin American Alliance Spanish Literature Contest Winner.

In the community, Azzalina is both a lifeguard and swim instructor at Willowood Swim Club. He started an emergency fund to help community members that have been impacted by COVID-19. Azzalina is an active member of Saint Peter's Catholic Church in Elizabethtown where he is an altar server and youth group member.

Azzalina plans to attend college with a major in Finance and a specialization in Investment Banking.
